This 450-page report on teaching children to read was compiled by a large number of some of the top researchers in this field. Scroll through the Table of Contents, where you’ll find that Chapter 6 is devoted to Computer Technology and Reading Instruction. For those of you involved in teacher training, I also recommend a look at the fifth chapter: Teacher Education and Reading Instruction.

“…computers can play an integral part in providing ELL students with valuable language experiences as they learn a new language. This article focuses on how computer-assisted instruction (CAI) can be a supplemental teaching tool for teaching English language learners. Additionally, a discussion of the benefits that have been found in using CAI with ELL is also provided.”

“The following guidelines may also be used as a checklist to help teachers of the language arts match their use of computers with what is known about the reading/writing process. We hope that the checklist will be used in a context where students are given opportunities to work in all the various computer modes: tool, tutor, and tutee.”
