Far away from Greece, in Phoenician times, in the region of King Argenor, lived his wonderful daughter, Europa. No one was more beautiful than she. Often she went out in her father s carriage to a secret place where she would dance. Zeus, the father of the Gods, was passionately in love with Europa, and wanted nothing more than to win her over.
He could only achieve this by a cunning plan. He ordered Hermes, his winged messenger, to drive a herd of cattle to the place where the girls danced.
Whilst Hermes obeyed his order, Zeus changed himself into a magnificent bull and slipped unnoticed into the herd. He watched the dancing girl.
"That bull is so magnificent" cried Europa. Then a bull knelt at her feet as if inviting her to a ride on his back. She placed a wreath of flowers around the horns of the bull, then climbed on his back.
She placed a wreath of flowers around the horns of the bull, then climbed on his back. Then the bull stood up and began to run. He ran faster and faster with Europa clinging, terrified, to his horns.
Soon they reached the open see and the bull stormed into the waves and swam with the girl on his back. "Don t be scared", he said. Finally, they reached dry land and the bull let Europa climb off.
Then the bull disappeared and Europa saw a man standing before her.
"I want to protect you, and for you to be my wife" he said. Europa agreed to the marriage, and lived happily for many years.
SHE is supposedly immortal because the land that she took for her own
now bears her name - EUROPA
